Fit4internet | Online Learning Paths "Digital education"

Three self-study modules to reinforce basic digital skills and prepare for the Dig-CERT knowledge review.

What is it about?

The fit4internet Dig-CERT (f4i Dig-CERT) has been developed on the initiative of fit4internet and is based on the Digital Competence Model for Austria - DigComp 2.2 AT. This contains 6 competence areas with 8 competence levels each (from basic to highly specialized).

In preparation for the Dig-CERT online knowledge assessment, three multimedia learning modules - learning paths - were developed in collaboration with common sense.

The learning paths cover learning content from competency levels 1-5 of the DigComp 2.2 competency domains and allow Dig-CERT's diverse target groups to independently orient and prepare for the online exam.

Enabling learning!

Each of the learning paths prepared with Articulate RISE is divided into three learning sections on different competence areas and each covers a specific knowledge type:

  • Learning path 1 has the motto "I can see through!" and follows the objective of conveying basic factual knowledge. The content deals with digital concepts, digital inclusion, general media competence and digital thinking.

  • Learning path 2 follows the guiding principle "I can do it!” Accordingly, learners are not only taught the basics, but are also encouraged to try out content themselves with the help of step-by-step instructions. Contents included in this learning module are Internet application, safety on the Internet, the operation of digital devices and copyright.

  • Learning path 3 - in line with the slogan "I want to know more!" - covers the subject areas of device protection, data privacy, and digital training.

The three learning paths build on each other and are aligned with the Dig-CERT exam questions. They can be completed in self-study. Didactic elements such as storytelling and case studies, interactive tasks, explanatory videos and practical handouts enable the learners to have a practical and sustainable learning experience.

During the implementation of this project, special attention was paid to accessibility. All learning paths were implemented in compliance with WCAG 2.1 (Level AA) as far as possible and can therefore also be operated with screen readers and keyboards. To make sure that this really works, we had the pilot module tested and evaluated by the agency WIENFLUSS. In addition to technical accessibility, inclusive didactic principles such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) were also taken into account to enable a positive and varied learning experience for all.

Our highlights and learnings in this project

One highlight was the co-creative kick-off workshop, where we developed the basis for the stories of the learning paths together with all stakeholders. This provided a clear direction for the project. During the development of the learning paths and especially in the feedback loops, we placed great emphasis on subjecting the stories and exercises to a so-called reality check to ensure that they were learner and target group oriented.

Another highlight was the enrichment of existing content with interesting facts to broaden learners' horizons beyond the exam material. By implementing "Did you know that ..."-sections we were thus able to create an additional dimension to learning.

As already mentioned, one focus of this project was the accessible design and the professional accessibility evaluation of the pilot module by the agency WIENFLUSS. This resulted in some insights for the production, but also for the project planning. Accessibility should be considered from the beginning in the budget and resource planning and includes aspects like the design of the additional learning materials, the consideration of alt texts and instructions, the testing phase and the production of audio transcripts.
