eLearning Readyness in Rwanda 

Kigali/Vienna. common sense conducted the second part of the eLearning program "KIST eLearning Specialist" at the Kigali Institute of Technology in the capital of Rwanda on behalf of GTZ. Approx. 30 participants were certified during a public project presenattion at the end of the workshop. They had developed pilot modules that will be offered on the institutes LMS site.

03-10-08 Tool for eLearning Decision Makers published

Eschborn/Vienna. The question "eLearning - is it for us?" is often asked by decision makers in companies and training institutions. A WBT especially for this target group has now been produced and published by common sense on behalf of GTZ. The module answers the most important questions that arise in eLearning implementation phases.

03-07-08 common sense implements eLDI 2008  

Bonn/Vienna. common sense will implement the 2008 version of the "eLDI" - eLearning Development und Implementation Programme on behalf of InWEnt. This is the fifth implementation in a row, this year with major organisational re-structuring, with African and Asian partner organisations. The seven month long programme will be offered in English and Spanisch, and starts with workshops in May, 2008, in Africa, Asia and South America.

03-01-08 TATCOT Spinal Orthotics Online Programme Roll-Out

Moshi/Vienna. After a successful pilot phase, the eLearning project at the Tanzania Traininig Centre for Orthopedic Technologies (TATCOT) will be rolled out. common sense has supported the pilot phase on behalf of InWEnt through consultancy and training. Now the cs team will be available for coaching during the roll-out phase. Three new modules (Pathology, Anatomy, Material Technology) are being offered since March 2008. In addition, the TATCOT eLearning Team was extended by new staff.

eLearning @ KIST, Rwanda 

Kigali/Vienna. In a region of East Africa that was shaken by civil war and genocide just a little more than 10 years ago, institutions are now actively assessing the possibilities of eLearning. One of these organisations is the Kigali Institute of Technology (KIST). One of the objectives is the development of Rwanda to an IT Hub in the centre of East Africa. common sense supports the eLearning development in Rwanda through training and consultancy on behalf of GTZ.

TATCOT Spinal Orthotics 

Moshi/Vienna. At the foot of Africa's hightest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, common sense assessed the pilot phase of the Spinal Orthotics eLearning programme at the Tanzania Training Centre for Orthopedic Technologies (TATCOT). The programme is the first of its kind in the field of Orthopedic Technologies in Africa and was supported by InWEnt. The piot phase ended with a face-to-face workshop with approx. 20 participants in Moshi, Tanzania.

Berlin/Vienna. UNEP team members Gerry Cunningham and MariaEugenia Arreola presented, along with common sense director Arndt Bubenzer, the results of the first UNEP eLearning pilot projects. In only 8 month, the UNEP team, supported by common sense, has set up an eLearning team, created and implemented the first modules. In the UN-Panel of Online Educa 2007, several UN agencies prsented their eLearning projects..

Windhoek/Lima/Manila/Vienna. This November, common sense is conducting three parallel workshops on three continents in two languages. 75 participants of the InWEnt Programs eLearning Development & Implementation (eLDI) and Implementacion y Desarollo del eLearning (IDeL) are coached during the production of course pilots for their own institutions. The regional workshops took place in Windhoek (Namibia), Lima (Peru) and Manila (Philippines).

11-05-07 Kick-off for UNEP eLearning 

Nairobi/Vienna. The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) eLearning project enters a new phase. Starting 5th of November, UNEP offers their first tutor supported eLearning pilot courses on their new eLearning platform. Course content and structure was developed by the UNEP eLearning team in co-operation with common sense as part of the "midwife" project. The UNEP eLearning project is part of MENTOR, a portal that strives to mainstream environmental information through IT.

Bonn/Vienna. From today onwards, 39 health professionals take part in the Internet-based course program “Management of Medicines in International Health”. The course aims at introducing the rational management of medicines in public health services and is hosted by InWEnt gGmbH in cooperation with the University of Leeds and the European Network for Education in International Health (tropEd). The facilitator from common sense supports participants and expert tutors. common sense is also responsible for course management, administration of the course workspace and course evaluation.

eLearning in Practice - Central Asia

Bishkek/Almaty/Bonn/Vienna. On the basis of the results of the Central Asia fact finding mission, common sense developed - on behalf of InWEnt - a new eLearning package "eLiP - eLearning in Practice". The practical program, with many examples and checklists, will guide course managers, instructional designers, content developers and tutors in their work. Universities and training institutions from different central asian countries participate in the eight-week long blended learning program with workshops in Bishkek.

Nuremberg/Vienna. common sense upgrades the CBTs "Personal-Managementsystem classic - PMS" and LOBE of DATEV. DATEV is the indisputable number 1 in Europe for data processing, service and software for tax consultants, accountants, lawyers and their clients. In Germany more than two thirds of all companies use DATEV Accounting through
their tax consultants; monthly wages and salaries are calculated for every fourth employee using DATEV systems, making it the standard in German
industry and commerce.

Nairobi/Bonn/Wien. Bereits zum zweiten mal führt common sense das Blended Learning-Programm "HIV & AIDS: Benchmarks for Health Professionals in Africa" im Auftrag der Abteilung Gesundheit von InWEnt durch. Focus Central Asia 

Bishkek/Vienna. On behalf of InWEnt and financed by the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswaertiges Amt), Julia Jaeger (common sense) participated as eLearning consultant in a Fact Finding Mission in Central Asia. Members of the InWEnt elearning team and Julia visited several education institutions in three countries (Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan). Objective: assessing the potential for future eLearning cooperation for InWEnt in the region.

UNEP Authoring Workshop  

Nairobi/Vienna. The educational and technical experts of the United Nation Environment Programme were trained in the use of open Source Software for content production in an intensive workshop in Nairobi. Objective: the UNEP staff will develop environmental eLearning content for its new MENTOR eLearning project. Mo Daschuetz and Arndt Bubenzer introduced several tools from the common sense Open Source Toolkit.

eLearning Africa  

Nairobi/Vienna. common sense used the platform of the only international eLearning conference on the African continent, "eLearning Africa" for networking with former participants, educational institutions and government representatives on issues related to media-based learning. The three members of the common sense team from Germany, Austria and Scotland were extremely busy for three days, discussing project ideas and delivering information on common sense in eLearning.

TATCOT - eLearning for Orthopedic-Technologists in Tanzania  

Moshi/Vienna. At the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the town of Moshi and its Hospital KCMC, with one of the very few training centres for orthopedic technologies in the country. common sense supports a team of instructors in the development of an eLearning/blended learning program on "Spinal Orthotics". InWEnt, Dept. of Health is project partner of TATCOT and contracts common sense for this project.

Oberleis/Vienna. "common sense - we make the road by walking" - this could be the motto of this years' team event conducted in Lower Austria. This retreat assists the common sense team every spring to focus on the tasks ahead, to integrate new team members or to discover new avenues. The team was supported by the Canadian-Swiss coach Katharina Jost from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, who accompanies the development of common sense since 2003.

eLDI 2007 - Program Kick-off Africa  

Pretoria/Vienna. The eLDI "eLearning Development and Implementation" Program, carried out by common sense on behalf of InWEnt, is offered in a "new and improved" version in 2007. The eight months long blended learning project has been streamlined and many additional features were added. Participants work with the common sense Open Source Toolkit, sort of a digital toolbox for eLearning course production. The initial workshop took place in Pretoria, directed by Julia Jäger, with support from NOLnet, Namibia's Open Learning Network.

SANTREN Workshop - eLearning & Environment

All modules will have a strong Disaster Risk Management component and are being developed on behalf of InWEnt.

UNEP eLearning Project, Nairobi 

Nairobi/Vienna. A three-day eLearning strategy workshop in Nairobi was the official kick-off for UNEP eLearning project. In the future, UNEP will offer continuing education and training using WBT and blended learning approaches through their eLearning portal MENTOR, especially from the field of "Early Warning" and "Environmental Assessment". common sense supports the UNEP eLearning project through a "Midwifing"-process, enabling the team in Nairobi to independently develop their own eLearning content.

Nairobi/Vienna. The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) eLearning implementation project starts with Arndt Bubenzer's presentation of eLearning models and their introduction into the training organisation. common sense will work in this project as eLearning expert.

01-18-07 - 01-25-07 eLDI Africa Workshop II in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 
Addis Ababa/Vienna. common sense facilitates the second workshop of the eLDI Africa (eLearning Development & Implementation) course. The course is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and is organised by InWEnt Bonn. 20 African experts for education are developing pilot eLearning courses for their organisations. The production of media-based content is realised solely with open source tools to enhance the sustainability of the training programs.

12-12-06 eLearning for United Nations Environment Programme 

Washington/Berlin/Vienna. common sense acts as consultant for the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) during the implementation of their eLearning platform MENTOR and the creation of pilot courses. In cooperation with InWEnt Berlin, common sense participates in the first stakeholder meeting in Washington in December 2006.

12-03-06 Workshop for Authors of the CD-ROM "Logistics. Basic Knowledge"  CD-ROM Logistics. Basic Knowledge

Bremen/Vienna. common sense trains logistics experts in the didactic and technical application of the open source authoring tool eXeLearning. Experts create specific content for the CD-ROM "Logistics. Basic Knowledge" and get support from common sense with the eLearning side of their project. The publisher of this CD-ROM is InWEnt Bonn; it is to be distributed in the regions SADC and EAC in Southern Africa.

The five modules of the CD-ROM include the topics transport management, logistics areas, planning of logistics systems, quality management, controlling and logistics marketing.


12-01-06 Successful Completion of an eLearning Project with the Indonesian-  German Institutes (IGI) 
Jakarta/Vienna. The certification of 20 trainers as "IGI eLearning experts" completed a successful IGI training of trainers (with eLearning content supplied by InWEnt) and the production of six pilot courses on behalf of the GTZ. Up-to-date open source eLearning tools were used to create SCORM-compliant modules for professional education in Indonesia. The content ranges from fish-breeding over CNC technology to computer hardware. The content will be available starting 2007 on the cooperative open source eLearning platform Moodle in about 20 institutes. www.igi-alliance.com/eLearning

11-20-06 eLDI 06 Workshop II in Lima, Peru 
Lima/Vienna. common sense conducts the second workshop of their eLDI (eLearning Development & Implementation) course in this year in Lima, Peru. Financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and organised by InWEnt Bonn and Lima, 16 specialists from educational institutions developed prototypes of course program for their respective organisation. A new feature of this year: common sense uses only open source tools for the production of media-based content to increase the sustainability of the education program. The tele-akademie of the University of Applied Sciences Furtwangen participates in this project as certifying partner.

11-01-06 eLearning for the Areas in Sri Lanka hit by the Tsunami 
Colombo/Vienna/Mannheim. On behalf of InWEnt Mannheim, common sense researched the possibilities of helping the areas hit by the Tsunami in 2004 by implementing eLearning courses for professional training. In a face-to-face workshop in Colombo, common sense assesses - together with ministry experts, teacher trainers and the regional administration - the eLearning potential of the areas hit by the Tsunami, especially the re-developing coastal regions.

10-01-06 eLearning in South America 
Bonn/Vienna/San José. common sense trains eLearning trainers outside the English-speaking world. Since autumn 2006, common sense supports the course program IDeL (Implementación y Desarrollo del eLearning) where educational experts from Latin- and South America develop pilot courses and set up regional eLearning centres.

common sense carries out this blended learning program on behalf of InWEnt Mannheim and Bonn between October 2006 and May 2007 for about 25 participants. The start-up workshop takes place in San José, Costa Rica.

09-21-06 LEARNTEC Forum Austria: E-Learning - Knowledge Management  - Milestones of an Innovative Learning Culture?  
Karlsruhe/Vienna. On September 21st, the LEARNTEC - International Convention and Trade Fair for Educational and Information Technology - holds some great presentations and a complementary exhibition for the interested public. About 90 visitors from businesses, colleges, non-profit organisations and politics visit the first LEARNTEC Forum Austria in the "Imperial Riding School" of the Vienna Renaissance Penta Vienna Hotel. common sense organised this event together with the Karlsruher Messe- und Kongress GmbH, the WIFI Vienna and the German Chamber of Commerce in Austria.

05-24-06 eLDI Africa in Addis Ababa 
Addis Ababa/Vienna. In Africa, the demand for train-the-trainer courses in the eLearning section grows so quickly that the successful InWEnt program eLDI is offered especially for African participants. This blended learning program is implemented between May 2006 and January 2007 by common sense. The first workshop takes place jointly with the trade fair "eLearning Africa" in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The participants are mainly from Ethiopia, but also from Kenya, Zambia and South Africa. The program is carried out by InWEnt in cooperation with NoLNET and the GTZ.

04-28-06 eLearning for Indonesian-German Institutes 
Jakarta/Vienna. common sense supports the Indonesian-German Institutes, an alliance of apporximately 20 vocational training institutes in Java, in implementing eLearning. The first workshops in April 2006 in Bandung and Jakarta for decision-makers and future eLearning staff built the basis for the development of several pilot courses. The project is funded by GTZ and KfW and will run until the end of 2006.

Vienna. The Austrian Red Cross offers a new, interactive WBT on First Aid for the Austrian public (available at www.erste-hilfe.at). The WBT was produced by common sense on behalf of the Austrian Red Cross for their current national First Aid campaign. Additionally, common sense acts as co-sponsor of this campaign.

First eLDI-Workshop 2006 in Feldafing / Lake Starnberg
Feldafing/Vienna. In 2006, common sense reruns the successful blended learning program "eLearning Development & Implementation" (eLDI) for trainers and educators from Asia, Africa and South Amerika on behalf of InWEnt. The initial workshop in Feldafing, Lake Starnberg, is the kick-off for a 8-months online phase. During this intensive online training, all participants prepare eLearning products for their own organisations.

03-01-06 eLearning Multipliers Program for Latin- and South America
Bonn/Vienna. On behalf of InWEnt, common sense conducts an interactive, tutor-supported online training on eLearning issues for educators in Latin and South America. The training is conducted in Spanish, with participants working on topics ranging from Instructional Design to eLearningManagement.

02-15-06 Successful LEARNTEC 2006 
Karlsruhe/Vienna. common sense is highly satisfied with the results of this year's LEARNTEC 2006 International eLearning Fair and Congress in Karsruhe, Germany. Workshops on "narrative eLearning" and interactive presentations at the common sense booth were well received by expert visitors. From many discussions and lively dialogues with high-ranking decision-makers common sense could state an accelerated interest in specialised consultancy services.

02-01-06 Course Development Disaster Risk Management and Environment
Johannesburg/Vienna. Experts from several Southern African universities are currently producing three online courses on environmental issues and on Disaster Risk Management, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). common sense is supporting this development  of regionally relevant knowledge in the SADC region (Southern African Development Community) through 2006, on behalf of InWEnt Berlin.

11-01-05 eLearning Strategy for NoLNET Namibia 

Windhoek/Vienna. Together with the stakeholders of NoLNET (Namibia Open Learning Network - public and private educational institutions in Namibia, Southern Africa), common sense develops an eLearning Strategy and trains eduational staff for the implementation of eLearning. This process will lead to the operation of a Namibian eLearning Center (eLC), supported by InWEnt. common sense has so far conducted trainings and strategy workshops in Gaborone, Botswana, and Windhoek, Namibia.

09-01-05 Staff Induction by eLearning - South Africa 
Pretoria/Vienna. On behalf of the Department of Water and Forestry in Pretoria, South Africa, common sense has produced an interactive induction course for new departmental staff.

During a workshop in Pretoria, common sense presented the the finalised "DWAF Induction Course" WBT.

The course is story-based and leads the learners through the content (forestry background, departmental structure and processes, etc.) in a narrative fashion.

07-05-05 common sense on "LEARNTEC Steering Commitee Austria" 
Karlsruhe/Vienna. common sense has been called onto the Austrian steering committee of the LEARNTEC, the leading eLearning fair and congress of the German-speaking area (Austria, Germany Switzerland). LEARNTEC is a yearly event (February) in Karlsruhe, Germany. common sense is assisting LEARNTEC in its positioning on the Austrian market through conducting regional events and marketing.

06-13-05 Web-Based Training for Country of Origin-Researchers 
Vienna. common sense assists ACCORD, the Austrian Center for Country of Origin and Asylum Research and Documentation at the General Secretariat of the Austrian Red Cross, with the instructional and technical design of a web-based training course for COI Researchers. ACCORD and its international partners collect and structure country information with a specific focus on the needs of asylum lawyers, professional and volunteer refugee counsels as well as persons deciding on claims for asylum and other forms of international protection.

06-05-05 Guide for eLearning Decision Makers 

Vienna/Essen/Berlin. common sense develops a web-based training module for eLearning decision-makers. In cooperation with MMB Institute for Media- and Competency Research common sense produces the WBT "Guide for eLearning Decision Makers". Basis for the WBT: a printed manual of the LERNET project.

LERNET is part of the action program „Innovation and Jobs in the Information Society of the 21st Century,“ and stands for the development of web-based learning solutions for mid-sized enterprises and public administration. LERNET is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour in Berlin.

The WBT will be available free of charge from the LERNET Website (http://www.lernet.info) as of August 2005 in German and English. The WBT will also be used in international trainings at InWEnt.

Vienna/Purbach. The common sense team enjoys the first days of summer on and around the "Neusiedler See", a large lake in eastern Austria. Wine tasting, picnics, sun bathing, speedboat tours accross the lake and lots of excellent food and drink supported the annual team building process.

Pretoria/Gaborone/Vienna. common sense develops four Web-based induction modules for new staff on behalf of the South African Department of Water and Forestry. The modules follow a storyline approach and allow for a quick introduction to the work and structure of the Department.

Mannheim/Vienna. common sense facilitates the first workshop of the 8-months course "eLearning Development & Implementation" (eLDI) for educational experts from Asia, Africa and South America on behalf of InWEnt. The workshop is the starting point for a 7-months online course with intensive cooperation and collaboration between the learners, leading to eLearing implementations in the participants' organisations. The module is carried out on the GC21 of InWEnt.

Karlsruhe/Vienna/Freiburg/Gaborone. The team of common sense is highly satisfied with information exchange and new contacts at this year's most important eLearning event in mainland Europe. Numerous interesting contacts were established. There was a steady flow of visitors at the common sense booth in the Stadthalle.

Additionally, partners from eDegree South Africa, Johannesburg were present at the booth and established additional contacts to the European eLearning scene.

Semarang, Indonesia/Vienna. Financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), organised by InWEnt - Capacity Building International- and Gadja Mada University, Yogyakarta (Indonesia): common sense conducted the eLDI (eLearning Development & Implementation) workshop with 17 participants from education and training institutions worldwide. After 6 months of online training, the participants of this face-to-face workshop developed short eLearning pilot courses for their individual institutions.

Evaluation of GIS - Online-Course in West- und East-Afrika

Vienna/ Cape Town. common sense evaluates an extensive blended learning course in the field of Groundwater Ressources and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), conducted by InWEnt on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation. The participants of this program come mainly from West- and East Africa. The evaluation is carried out as extensive online survey, combined with in-depth interviews with participants at a face-to-face workshop in Cape Town, South Africa.

Vienna. Cocktails und conversation were the ingredients of the first circle3 network event, organised by common sense on the 21st of October in the beautiful Vienna bar "Halbestadt" by Austria's well-known Barkeeper Erich Wassicek. The lively little group of participants was comprised of HR- and training specialists from the telecommunication field, from medical technology, foods, paper production, university and NGOs. Objective: close networking and exchange between experts in HR and training in Austrias' top organisations.

For the first time, the Web-based Training courses "eLearning Content Development" and "Tutoring & Support of Virtual Learning Communities" are being offered to education and training specialists worldwide. common sense manages both courses on behalf of InWEnt, Bonn. The online course "eLearning Content Development" was developed in close cooperation with the tele-akademie in Germany. Participants from more than ten countries around the globe participate in these courses, which are being offered on InWEnt's Global Campus 21.

SANTREN eLearning Evaluation in Botswana

Gaborone/Vienna. common sense supports the first conference of the Southern African Network for Training and Research on the Environment (SANTREN) in Botswana by providing input on eLearning course evaluation. Arndt Bubenzer presented the results of an online evaluation of approximately 100 participants of the first four SANTREN online courses on behalf of InWEnt. These courses were produced in the SADC region, outlining environmental problem areas native to the region.

Workshop eLearning Development and Implementation "eLDI"
Bonn/Vienna. During the last week in April, common sense facilitated part of the first face-to-ace session of the "eLDI" blended Learning course. During a 4-day long forum in northern Germany, the entire common sense team, joined by expert guests, developed new concepts, discussed strategies, organisational aspects and market potential of eLearning projects. The question: "eLearning with common sense: Quo Vadis?" was addressed by the team, supported by the knowledgable coach and facilitator Katharina Jost, from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Bremen/Vienna. common sense was awarded with an eLearning contract by the Government of Bremen, Germany. The Government of the federal state of Bremen seeks to enhance eLearning knowledge among companies and enterprises located there. In 2004, common sense will offer three 2-day long trainings for decision-makers and key eductaional staff on eLearning implementations in companies.

He participates in the Parallel Session FOCUS 24 - "E-Learning: Making a Contribution to Effective Development Strategies". There, he presents the course "eLearning Training & Management" as a best practice example for blended learning in international development.

10-24-02 eLearning workshop in Brunei Darussalam 
Bandar Seri Begawan. On behalf of and together with the German Foundation for International Development (DSE, after a merger now called InWEnt), common sense is facilitating an international eLearning workshop in Brunei Darussalam from October 24 to November 5, 2002. The workshop is final part of the "eLearning Training & Management" course funded by the DSE/InWEnt. During the course, the 17 participants from Southeast Asia, Southern Asia, Middle East and Africa develop concepts for their own eLearning courses. common sense set up a special learning scenario which led the participants through the necessary steps and provided tutorial support. The participants' concepts are finalised with the active assistance and coaching of the workshop team and are presented at the end of the workshop in Brunei Darussalam.

10-22-02 SANTREN Instructional Designer/Editor III in Malawi
Lake Malawi. Daniela Giannini and Arndt Bubenzer from common sense are leading the first "Instructional Designer/Editor III" workshop at Lake Malawi. The workshop is part of the Southern African Network for Training on the Environment (SANTREN) training program which is carried out on behalf of the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft (CDG, after a merger now called InWEnt). During the workshop, the African participants develop a concept for the transformation of their content from script-based instruction to Web-based instruction. The consultants from common sense will continue to coach the workshop participants during the next months and do actively support the production of eLearning courses on environmental topics in Southern Africa.

Stuttgart. common sense is producing the Web-based course "Europ@ Online" on behalf of the Political Education Centre in Stuttgart (Germany). This course deals with politics concerning the European Union and its further enlargement. The course "Europ@ Online" starts on November 4, 2002, with 250 participants from Germany and other countries (e.g. Czech Republic and Poland).
